Spinal Cord Injury

A physician examining a spinal cord injury

At The Schlachter Law Firm, many of our clients have suffered a spinal cord injury that has left them with a neurological deficit. The spinal cord is that part of the central axis of the nervous system that connects the brain to the periphery. All impulses from body parts below the neck that go to and from the brain, pass through the spinal cord.

An injury to the spinal cord will affect the transmission of these impulses usually by blocking the signals at the level of the injury. Paralysis or loss of motor function at the level of the injury is a common finding in spinal cord injury. The conditions that cause spinal cord injury are numerous. Some of them are: complex degenerative disease of the bones and discs, infections such as epidural abscess, unrecognized spinal cord tumors, inflammatory conditions such a s transverse myelitis or multiple sclerosis, large herniated discs, and trauma. Examples of these types of cases that involve medical negligence will be presented in other blog topics.

Patients with spinal cord injuries have to undergo extensive rehabilitation and life style changes to accommodate their level of function.
